(Walnut Creek, California, February 28, 2002) - Southern growers now have a more effective way to apply the fast-acting, postemergence broadleaf herbicide Resource®, thanks to a new label recently approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. Resource is now labeled for aerial application.

Resource, marketed by Valent U.S.A. Corporation, was originally developed in the Midwest in the mid-1990s. Its primary purpose is to control velvetleaf and other broadleaf weeds on contact in both soybeans and corn. Valent experts also recognized the usefulness of the product for Southern growers.

“We learned that Resource, when tank mixed with Roundup®, enhances the control of morningglories in soybeans and also enhances Roundup’s control of cutleaf evening primrose, Carolina geranium, and other winter weeds in a burndown situation,” said John McClendon, Valent market manager for Southern row crops.

Because Valent realized the significance of the product in the South, the company decided to have the product registered for aerial application.

“If growers have weeds such as cutleaf evening primrose in a burndown situation, and it is too wet to use ground equipment or they want to cover a lot of ground, aerial application is the way to go,” McClendon added. “It’s an important product feature to have the ability to cover the acres in a short period of time and not worry about whether it’s too wet to drive across the field.”

For Southern growers, chemicals cannot be applied by ground early in the year because it’s too wet, according to John Pawlak, Valent product development manager.

“But with the aerial application label, Southern growers have more freedom,” Pawlak said. “Valent always has and will continue to respond to customer needs such as this.”

Other Valent products for Southern row crops such as cotton, rice, tobacco and sugarcane include Bolero® 8 EC Herbicide, Cobra® Herbicide, Danitol® 2.4 EC Spray Insecticide, DiPel® Insecticide, Knack® Insect Growth Regulator, Orthene® 75 Insecticide, Orthene 90 Insecticide, Orthene 97 Insecticide, Release® Plant Growth Regulator, RyzUp® Plant Growth Regulator, Select® 2 EC Herbicide, Valor™ Herbicide, and XenTari® Insecticide.

Valent U.S.A. Corporation markets and sells herbicides, insecticides, bio-insecticides, insect growth regulators, nematicides, baits, and plant growth regulators for the agricultural, horticultural, turf, ornamental, and professional pest control markets.
