FMC Professional Solutions Launches New Segway Fungicide

New Mode of Action Prevents Pythium, Combats Disease Resistance

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (May 1, 2007)--FMC Professional Solutions, a division of FMC Corporation (NYSE: FMC) announces EPA registration of Segway™ fungicide for the golf course and turf management industries.

With a new mode of action for increased effectiveness, Segway offers immediate and season-long control of pythium diseases such as Pythium blight, Pythium root dysfunction and Pythium damping off on greens, tees and fairways. Segway has no known disease resistance, making it an excellent foundation for a disease management program that includes other labeled fungicides with different modes of action.

“Due to its stopping power, golf course superintendents and turf managers can use Segway first in their rotation and then make it a regular part of their rotation for season-long control of pythium,” said Rick Ekins, turf and ornamental product manager for FMC Professional Solutions.

“It’s important to rotate products in order to minimize the development of disease resistance and preserve the lifetime of all chemical controls; Segway provides a new mode of action for an effective pythium control program,” said Ekins.

In university trials, Segway™ fungicide was compared to a variety of industry standard Pythium blight treatments. These trials were conducted from 2002 through 2006 at major universities in California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin. A summary of the data from these trials shows that Segway, applied at 0.9 fl oz/1,000 ft2 provided superior control of Pythium blight in a variety of pythium environments, year after year.

Segway at the 0.9 fl oz/1,000 ft2 provided better than 80% control of Pythium blight in these trials, compared to an average of only 66% control for other treatments.

According to 2005 field trials conducted by North Carolina State University, Segway applied at a rate of 0.90 fl oz/1000 ft2 also provides excellent preventive control of Pythium root dysfunction on turf.

Newly-constructed and young greens, typically less than three years old, are particularly prone to Pythium root dysfunction, which is a growing problem for golf courses across the country. Controlling this disease is also becoming increasingly difficult, because disease pathogens are growing resistant to today’s commonly used fungicides. The new mode of action provided by Segway controls this troubling disease effectively.

The active ingredient in Segway, cyazofamid, prevents pythium by stopping spores from germinating, which inhibits the spread of the disease. University studies indicate Segway is highly effective at controlling diseases in professionally managed turf areas, providing good protection against disease for a period of seven days, and up to as many as 28 days, depending upon the level of disease pressure.
